Les pathologies de la corruption

LA CORRUPTION:
LA DENSITE DE NOTRE IDENTITE EN JEU

Symphorien Ntibagirirwa
Ethique & Société

Abstract :This editorial note attempts to frame the various articles published in this issue. It argues that, as a phenomenon which is as old as the human history and civilisation, corruption is characteristic of the human weak nature, or better, the fall, biblically speaking. As such, corruption deprives us of our ontological density as beings that aspire to what is good and right in so far as we are created in the image and resemblance of God. It puts a break to our sustained move to moral life as corrupt people tend to give priority to calculative rationality (which seeks short-term individual dividends) over comprehensive rationality open to sustainable results characteristic of the common good. It gives priority to individuality over sociality. This being the case, corruption is a universally evil phenomenon even in those societies where it is hardly observed or where it does not seem to have effects on the socio-political order and economic prosperity. It is within this framework that different analyses and reflections are introduced.

AFFIRMER SON IDENTITE POUR BIEN S’INTEGRER AU MONDE ET CONTRIBUER A SON HUMANISATION
Symphorien Ntibagirirwa
Ethique et Société

Abstract:This editorial note revisits Clegg’s song, “I am seating on the top of Kilimanjaro”, and Mandela’s dream of the “rain-bow nation” to suggest that the affirmation of one’s identity is a sure ground for the regional integration and one’s contribution to its humanisation. The result of this dynamics cannot be the kind of limited world premised on the dogma of the market and in which human relationships are thought of in terms of selling and buying only. It is an integration that takes seriously the individual and the social nature of the human being. Seen from this point of view, the regional integration should be the starting point of a rain-bow world and the civilisation of the universal. It is within this framework that the various articles in this issue should be read and understood.

DEMOCRATIE : LA VOTRE OU LA NOTRE ?(Editorial)
Symphorien Ntibagirirwa
Ethique et Société

Abstract:Within the parameters of the general theme of this issue: “The democratic processes in post-conflict societies”, this editorial reflection tries to ask and to answer the question concerning the foundations of democracy in its universality and particularity. It argues that democracy is, indeed, one of “the things necessary for the good life”, not only because it is a socio-political framework where people test their self-determination, self–definition and the definition of their destiny, but it is also the framework of the fundamental values, namely: dignity, equality, and freedom.
